A chaotic scene unfolded Saturday night at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, after a suspected gunman reportedly charged through a security checkpoint and opened fire, striking a Secret Service agent.
President Donald Trump later shared video footage of the incident, showing the suspect rushing past a magnetometer before law enforcement officers reacted within seconds.
The president, who was quickly escorted away from the area, appeared shortly after alongside federal officials to address the incident and commend the response.
“Tonight, you saw the very worst and the very best of this country,” said Todd Blanche during the press briefing. “You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward… but you also saw the very best, because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they’re supposed to do.”
According to officials, the Secret Service agent who was shot in the chest was protected by a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. Trump confirmed he had spoken directly with the agent, describing him as doing “great” under the circumstances.
