President Donald Trump argued this week that the Democratic Party’s growing embrace of democratic socialist candidates is pushing it further from the political center and creating long-term problems for the party.
Speaking in an interview with Breitbart News from the Oval Office, Trump said history shows that socialist and communist systems ultimately fail.
“You would think that they couldn’t go anywhere… if you look back on history, it’s never worked,” Trump said. “It always ends up the same way.”
Trump pointed to recent Democratic primary victories by progressive challengers over establishment-backed candidates as evidence that the party is moving further to the left. He specifically referenced New York races in which longtime Democrats were defeated by more progressive opponents.
Despite welcoming the defeat of some longtime political rivals, Trump argued that many of the candidates replacing them hold even more left-wing positions.
He also predicted that the Democratic Party would be more difficult for Republicans to defeat if it returned to a more moderate platform.
“I think if they went back to the center, they’d be much tougher to beat,” Trump said.
The president also weighed in on several potential Democratic contenders for future elections, criticizing figures including Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump suggested Democrats still have other potential candidates who could emerge but declined to identify whom he considers their strongest prospects.
