During an appearance Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s Hannity, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) predicted that several governments hostile to the United States could soon face regime change.
According to Cruz, Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba are all vulnerable to political collapse in the near term.
Host Sean Hannity asked whether the developments could be described as “freedom on the march around the world.”
“I think that’s exactly right,” Cruz replied. “We are at an extraordinary moment in history. It is entirely possible that within the next six months we could see the regimes fall in Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba — and see them replaced by governments that want to be friends with the United States.”
Cruz cautioned that the outcome is far from guaranteed. “I’m not being pollyannish about this,” he said. “A thousand things can go wrong. But if it does happen, it would be the most consequential geopolitical shift since the fall of the Berlin Wall — since America won the Cold War without firing a shot.”
The Texas senator said he recently discussed the issue with President Donald Trump, focusing particularly on Iran. “I told him this regime is teetering — that the ayatollah is in its last days,” Cruz said. “I urged him not to let this opportunity pass.”
Cruz went on to describe the Iranian government as America’s most dangerous adversary. “The ayatollah routinely chants ‘death to America,’” he said. “This is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. The regime is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American servicemen and women and has provided more than 90 percent of the funding for Hamas and Hezbollah.”
Toppling Iran’s ruling clerics, Cruz argued, would have far-reaching consequences. “It would be a tremendous advance for the people of Iran, a major improvement for the Middle East, and most importantly, a massive boost to U.S. national security,” he said. “I believe President Trump is providing the leadership necessary to make our country safer.”
