A protest outside a New Jersey ICE detention facility spiraled into chaos Monday as left-wing activists and Democrat politicians gathered to support illegal immigrant detainees staging a hunger strike, leading to confrontations with federal agents and accusations of political theater from the Department of Homeland Security.
Roughly 125 protesters assembled outside Delaney Hall detention center, including Andy Kim, Cory Booker, and Mikie Sherrill, after activists claimed detainees were facing poor living conditions and inadequate food.
Booker described the detention center as a “nightmare” and vowed to continue oversight visits, while Kim accused ICE agents of escalating tensions after protesters clashed with law enforcement.
DHS Says Protesters Obstructed Federal Officers
According to the Department of Homeland Security, protesters physically blocked ICE officers from exiting the facility and ignored repeated verbal warnings to clear the entrance.
DHS stated that officers used “the minimum amount of force necessary” to restore order and protect federal property after demonstrators refused commands to disperse.
The agency also pushed back hard against media narratives portraying the crowd as peaceful protesters.
“The First Amendment protects speech and peaceful assembly — not rioting,” DHS said in a statement, reminding the public that obstructing law enforcement is a federal crime and assaulting officers is a felony.
Federal officials also clarified that no individuals were directly hit by pepper-ball projectiles during the incident.
Sen. Andy Kim Claims ICE “Poured Gasoline on the Fire”
Despite being allowed inside the facility earlier in the day, Kim later claimed he had difficulty breathing after walking into a lingering cloud of pepper spray outside the detention center.
The senator accused ICE agents of inflaming the situation by deploying armored vehicles and heavily equipped officers instead of engaging with lawmakers over detainee complaints.
“Civilians were tackled and restrained, and agents fired pepper balls and spray into the crowd,” Kim claimed, calling the facility “a failure” of the Trump administration.
But DHS sharply rejected that characterization, arguing that Democrat politicians were deliberately using Memorial Day demonstrations to attack immigration enforcement while downplaying aggressive behavior from protesters.
Immigration Politics Are Heating Up Again
The Delaney Hall confrontation comes as immigration once again becomes one of the defining political flashpoints heading into the next phase of President Donald Trump’s second term.
The Trump administration has continued ramping up detention operations, deportation efforts, and ICE enforcement nationwide, while progressive activists and Democrat officials increasingly frame detention facilities as humanitarian crises.
Critics of the protest say the incident reflects a growing pattern in which elected Democrats blur the line between congressional oversight and direct participation in activist demonstrations targeting federal law enforcement.
Supporters of the protesters argue the detainees deserve humane treatment and that lawmakers have a responsibility to expose alleged abuses inside detention centers.
But for many Americans watching the footage from outside Delaney Hall, the images reinforced a different message entirely: Democrat politicians standing shoulder-to-shoulder with activists obstructing federal immigration officers while the border crisis continues to dominate national politics.
